IRRIGATED LAND USE OPTIONS
To help Wairarapa farmers and growers understand the opportunities that irrigation water could provide, an initial series of land use case studies has been done on three local dryland farms.
Five irrigated land uses have been theoretically assessed for:
- financial viability - does irrigation pay?
- on-farm nutrient impacts - what does it mean for the environment?
- management and lifestyle implications - what changes will be needed?
The land uses studied so far are are:
- sheep dairy
- livestock finishing
- mixed use of arable, livestock, specialist seeds.
The studies aren’t detailed business cases but are designed to provide some initial ideas to help local farmers and growers think about how irrigation could work for them. Further studies are planned in the future.
Check out the case studies to see what might be possible on your property.
